I have 3 3/4 welded from about 8 inches behind the teeth to the crossmember at the top, loose enough to follow the curveature of the bucket. The hole helps, but as mentioned the chain also. Very seldom did I curl the bucket to heap it full - seemed that when the bottom of the bucket was level with the bottom of the trench, the dirt would pack into the bucket real tight, and would NOT come out, no matter how hard it got banged. What worked the best for me - I would keep the bucket 'dumped' pretty far, and dig like that. I got tired of digging the dirt out of the bucket with the hand shovel. I was digging clay with a backhoe the other year, maybe a 12 inch trench for tile line from a downspout. It doesn't eliminate it entirely but does prevent suction from holding the dirt in the bucket. Try cutting a 1" to 1-1/2" hole in the bottom of the bucket. After clean and shiney, keep spraying slip plate. Helps on dozer blades above the cutting edge until it gets polished up. Only thing I have found that helps, paint on slip-plate. When you dump the bucket, the chain comes tight and pulls a lot of the dirt out. ![]() On our backhoe, we have a heavy log chain welded inside the bucket and hooks to the boom.
